Course Narrative
The course Span 304: Intro to Spanish Literature, falls into criteria and the requirements for MLO 4 (Literary and Cultural Knowledge). The course, which I enrolled in during the fall of 2017, focused on introducing the principles of literary analysis through mainly readings and discussion. The class, instructed by Dr. Christine Fernandez in full Spanish, met twice a week and created an environment where students felt comfortable discussing the readings and analyzing (often in groups) the main points and arguments that were drawn upon by the Hispanic works we were able to explore. Some of the materials that we used in class are considered classical literary works of great significance to the overall Spanish literature. Not only was I able to analyze literary works, but I was also able to obtain historical and cultural background. The class itself served as an important step to understanding main points that were going to be brought up in my upcoming upper division courses. For example, I was introduced to the golden age of literature in Spain (La Epoca de Oro), Neruda, Lorca, among others, and in addition to the particular eras and genres that they each belonged to. These were all in a sum subjects and characters that I have continuously refer to through my academic voyage. I definitely enjoyed adding to my Spanish Literature knowledge. After having taken this course, I became more aware of the beauty of Spanish poetry. This is definitely a subject that I wish to develop further upon. Aside from reading novels, I will incorporate more poetry into my readings and use the analytical skills that I developed through this course in order to have a more clear understanding of what the poets are trying to convey.
